Day 19 – Stellenbosch is Nothing to Whine About

In the U.S., we have Napa Valley.  In South Africa, they have “The Winelands.”

A few months ago, Annie & Michael were buying some wine at a store in New York where they met a lovely man named Thomas Webb.  Thomas was in the store promoting wine from the Thelema Vineyard in Stellenbosch (located just outside of Cape Town).   Annie took his business card, kept in touch, and on Thursday the three amigos set out to see Thomas at Thelema.  What we didn’t know is that his family actually owns Thelema…and, that Thomas would roll out the red carpet for our visit.

He spent two hours driving
us all around the vineyard in his Land Rover…showing us the incredible views
and explaining the cultivation process for each varietal.  (p.s. how cute is his dog?)

His family started this
vineyard when he was seven.  What a place
to grow up, right?

We went to a nearby town
called Franschhoek where we had a fantastic lunch.  Thankfully, there was something on the menu
that Melissa could eat (p.s. she has been a real trooper…hasn’t had to break
out the tuna fish quite yet!)

One final beauty shot of the
area.  We also wanted a way to tee up the
story about our cab driver almost running Melissa over…broken foot and
all.  We are VERY grateful that didn’t
happen or she would be (you guessed it) pushing up daisies.  Ughghg.
More soon.  We travel to Zimbabwe
tomorrow.
