Angkor Management

Siem Reap, and all of Cambodia for that matter, is known for being home to the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat Temple.

There were many young Buddhist monks-in-training visiting Angkor Wat, as well.  They graciously took pictures with us and many other tourists.  Their one question was very sweet…they asked if their picture would be shown to our friends in America.  Done.

Team SE Asia also went to Ta Prohm, a former monastic complex that is known for its jungle overgrowth.  Trees literally “consume” sections of the ruins. Restoration is underway, but it’s clear that it will take a long time.  Ta Prohm was made famous in modern times because it’s where “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” was filmed.

As part of “temple-palooza”, we also saw Angkor Thom, a former royal city.  Each of the five gates of the city includes four of these large giant faces. And, many of the walls inside include bas-reliefs that depict battle scenes and mythological stories.

Jackie & Michael were so inspired that they took a temple building class.

The day really was a bit of a circus, so what better way to end it than by going to a real one! Phare, The Cambodian Circus, is an amazing blend of traditional and modern theatre, music, dance, acrobatic, juggling and contortion that is choreographed and performed by high school students.  The circus is part of an NGO called the PPS Association that was founded in 1994 by eight Cambodian ex-refugee artists with the goal of reviving the Cambodian art scene.  PPS works mainly with disadvantaged young people and emphasizes self-development and sustainability through the arts.  Team SE Asia was sincerely in awe and Annie is already trying to figure out what client she can pitch to hire them.  To learn more about PPS:    http://www.pharecambodiancircus.org
