EWR + MSY - xoxo CDMX

Hola from Mexico City (CDMX)!  We’re spending the first few days of our Thanksgiving trip in one of the largest cities in the world.   But, wait – we live in NYC and New Orleans!  So, what kind of vacation is this?  Well, when you love food, museums, shopping, and want to learn about another culture (how about those Aztecs?) without breaking the bank…there may be no BETTER place to travel.

Some fast facts about Mexico City:

·      More than 20 million people live here (including 600,000 US Citizens)

·      It has the largest number of museums in the Americas (more than 160) and is second in the world only to London

·      CDMX ranks among the best cities in the world for luxury dining (and, at half the price of NYC, Singapore, London, Tokyo)

Aubrey did a lot of the planning for this trip (thanks, Aubs!) so all credit to her for the first foodie pick which was a 9:00 AM BREAKFAST reservation at Masala y Maiz, one of TIME Magazine’s 2019 “World’s Greatest Places to Eat.”  https://time.com/collection/worlds-greatest-places-2019/5654156/masala-y-maiz-mexico-city-mexico/

Next, the Frida Kahlo Museum which is also called “Casa Azul” (The Blue House).  She died in 1954, but is still recognized as Latin America’s most celebrated female artist.  After that, we went to the Museo Dolores Olmedo which is home to a huge collection of both Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo paintings.

And, then more food.  This is just the start of the tostado and taco tasting. BTW, Mexico City is not the original home of the taco.  Tacos originated in the silver mines of Mexico; it’s said that the little charges they would use to excavate the ore were called “taco”.  So, we guess because tacos do “explode” with flavor in your mouth…that’s the connection?!

Tomorrow - the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon.  Buenos noches por ahora!
