Picturesque Portugal

During our week in this beautiful country, we explored a few smaller towns as we made our way in between Lisbon, Porto and The Algarve:  Obidos, Nazaré, Coimbra, and Évora.

There’s so much to see and do in Portugal and we only scratched the surface with this trip. Here’s one pic from each location and a little bit of what we learned.

The best way to describe Obidos is to quote Michael who said, “This town is charming AF!”  This walled medieval village is not to be missed if you are in the area.  Just think twice before deciding to walk along the top of the wall…yikes.

Nazaré is a beach town is known as the surfing capital of Portugal and for its giant waves that break behind the cliff where we took this photo (https://nazarewaves.com). We were there on the day of a competition so couldn’t get close to that area. This is great place to stop for a beachside lunch.

Coimbra was the medieval capital of Portugal for more than a century and is home to the country’s oldest and most prestigious university.  Coimbra is “the Oxford of Portugal”.

Évora received its UNESCO World Heritage site designation in 1986 to help protect this walled city and its roots dating back to roman times. This photo is from The Chapel of the Bones which is hard to explain so we’re including the description from the site.

On a much less creepy note, Évora also has some of the best restaurants in the Alentejo region (we had a great dinner at Bruxa d’Evora). Just one more stop to go – The Algarve.
